BHS aims to promote Brittany to an anglophone public worldwide, and to improve the professional level of presentation of information for English-speaking visitors and residents.

BHS believes firmly in Brittany’s remarkable range and depth of interest for visitors, and seeks to help develop the increased potential of year-round events and activities.

BHS is based on a genuine passion for Brittany and a commitment to promoting all positive aspects of this modern and vibrant region.

BHS trusts in the power of the word well-wielded, and recognises the importance of accurate use of vocabulary and language in a modern context. We acknowledge the visitor’s preference for substance over hyperbole, and the importance of points of cultural connection and contrast between Britain and Brittany in presenting heritage and history.

What we do

We offer creative texts and creative translation in the context of Brittany tourism.

e.g. Pays de Morlaix Tourisme  -  Morlaix town leaflet;

Abbaye de Daoulas - exhibition leaflet

We provide consultancy and training for promoting Brittany to an anglophone public.

e.g. Provision of training for guides at the Chateau de Kerjean;

Training course for French guides 'Comment Présenter le Patrimoine Breton à un Public Anglophone'

We encourage British residents of Brittany to learn about the history and culture of the region through courses, study days and talks.

e.g. Study Days on Megaliths, the Age of Saints, Medieval Brittany, How to Read a Breton Church

We organise guided walks and visits to explore Brittany's diverse landscape and places of interest.

e.g. Walks in the Monts d’Arrée, along the Nantes-Brest canal, among the Carnac megaliths, around Quimper, Morlaix and Vannes.

Background

Brittany Heritage Services was started by Wendy Mewes (www.wendymewes.com) in January 2009. She is the author of eight successful books about Brittany, with a focus on landscape and history, as shown by the titles Discovering the History of Brittany, Walking the Brittany Coast and a guide to the Nantes-Brest Canal. She also founded the Brittany Walks organisation in 2004, and has walked thousands of kilometres in the region, as well as leading many walks for groups. Other credits include a series on Breton history broadcast on AIKB community radio via Radio Kreizh Breizh, and filming with French regional TV for her work on the Nantes-Brest canal. She is @brittanyexpert on Twitter and has also produced a series of Ebooks in that guise (see www.brittanyexpert.com).

The range of services developed by Brittany Heritage Services sprang from her strong teaching and historical research background, positive communication skills and a long-term interest in tourism. They reflect a widespread knowledge of both modern Brittany and its rich heritage, and a constant concern for the quality of visitor experience in this infinitely varied region.
